With the ongoing fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, it looks like most of us will be having a quiet Christmas at home. But what’s stopping us from treating ourselves to a decadent meal? Here’s our guide to a delicious Christmas dinner at home this year, from where to buy Christmas groceries and the best takeaway options to where to stock up on great wine.
Cook Your Own Christmas Meal
There may not be much to do this Christmas, so why not make grocery shopping and cooking the main event of the holiday? There’s something very sweet about preparing a meal from scratch together, and it’ll keep you busy all day long. Oliver’s The Delicatessen (Shop 201-205, 2/F Landmark Prince’s Building, 10 Chater Road, Central) has everything you’ll need for a traditional Christmas meal, from a whole turkey and minced pies to gingerbread and panettone. City’super (various branches including ifc, Central and Times Square, Causeway Bay) also has a great mix of groceries and cooked food that covers a wide range of cuisine including Western and Japanese. Both of these two stores also offer a great range of cooked dishes that you can order in advance for your Christmas meal.
For those craving Wagyu and sushi for Christmas instead, Sogo (555 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay) and Don Don Donki (various branches, including 100QRC, Central) are among the best-stocked Japanese supermarkets. And if you’re feeling Korean and kimchi stews this holiday season, you’ll find everything you need at New World Mart (5 Kimberley Street) in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Order a Whole Roasted Turkey
Nothing screams Christmas like having roasted turkey on the dining table, and there are so many amazing takeaway turkey packages available this year. We’re most excited about the 3-course Christmas meal kit (HK$380/person) by Simon Rogan at Home, launched by the chef behind Roganic and Aulis Hong Kong. American smokehouse Smoke & Barrel’s Turkey Takeaway set (HK$1,888; serves 6 pax) is another great deal, including a whole smoked turkey and cozy festive dishes like mashed potatoes, stuffing and a pecan pie.
Already had your fill of turkey during Thanksgiving? La Rotisserie, one of our favorite spots for roasted chicken, is offering a Christmas exclusive roasted guinea fowl set (HK$438 and up). According to the restaurant, it is a game bird serving extra moist, tender and flavorful meat.
Savour Some Decadent Japanese Beef
The beauty of spending Christmas in Hong Kong is that there really isn’t any traditions to follow. Most of the restaurants stay open, and you can choose from all sorts of cuisines. And well, we think shabu shabu with juicy, tender Japanese beef pairs extremely well with the cold weather. Get a top quality shabu shabu set from Nikushou, which comes with a host of appetizers and three kinds of premium meat. Their menu changes regularly so make sure to check their social media for the most updated selections. Or enjoy the sizzling sounds and the smoke that grilling Japanese beef makes by ordering the Yakiniku Home Experience Christmas Bundle (HK$2,080 and up) by Yakinikumafia. It includes a grill set that you can keep, ribeye, three cuts of Ozaki wagyu beef, rice, appetizers, beer and more.
A Hong Kong-style Christmas Meal
If you’re from Hong Kong and will be spending the holidays at home with your family, chances are they won’t be into turkey or pecan pies at all. But don’t fret — there are plenty of fantastic takeaway options for you. Beloved chicken pot restaurant 66 Hotpot is delivering their signature spicy chickpen pots to Hong Kong island, Kowloon and New Territories. The soup and chicken comes with an addictive array of spices and chilies, and you can choose from many more add-on ingredients such as beef and seafood. For something more elegant, Duddell’s Peking Duck Set (HK$1,380; serves 4 pax) will surely impress your relatives. You’ll get a whole roasted Peking Duck and four other classic Chinese dishes including crispy prawn in salty egg yolk and crispy bean curd in salt and pepper.
Stock Up on Some Great Wine
There’s nothing like some quality wine to slow things down at the end of the day. Shop from Watson’s Wine’s massive catalog of wine, liquor, beer, champagne, and vintages. Another great option is Jebsen Fine Wines, which carries wine from many prestigious wineries from around the world.
