An elevator convo with Ada Cheung. See here for more from our Next Up series.
What do you do?
I am the program director of One Ten, a social enterprise with the mission to empower the young adults of Hong Kong through exercise. I am also a spin instructor at XYZ, one of the studios collaborating with One Ten.
How does your business work?
One Ten offers exercise classes of all types. We currently have spin, yoga and HIIT classes (both indoor and outdoor).
The uniqueness of One Ten is this: the instructors are carefully selected based not only on their fitness qualifications, but on their heart, attitude and altruistic passion towards serving young adults. One Ten classes are delivered with messaging specifically designed to encourage and motivate young adults, guided by the expertise of our team and advisory board.
Participants can sign up for the classes through three methods: paid classes at a special One Ten rate, earned classes where they can exchange volunteer service hours for classes, or sponsored classes, where One Ten partners up with local organizations that specifically support young adults.
How did your business get started?
Belinda Koo, the founder of One Ten, has a deep passion for working with young adults. She has three sons herself, two of whom are in their teen years, making this group one that’s very dear to her heart. I have worked with youth myself for over ten years and have always been passionate about and fascinated by the social and psychology well-being of people. One Ten was created out of this mutual passion and our team has expanded exponentially since our official launch in September!
Who are your customers?
We call the participants of One Ten “warriors”. Our warriors are young adults aged between 14 to 22 years old. We focus on this particular age range as they are going through specific experiences as they complete secondary school and university. Their identities can become confusing as they navigate the responsibilities and expectations of the various environments they are enmeshed in: personal, familial, social and academic.
What is a day in your working life like?
I juggle teaching spin classes at XYZ, overseeing the running of One Ten, and completing a master’s degree in social work at HKU!
Where do you see your business in the next five years?
One Ten has only just begun and is on an exciting journey. In the future, we want to provide the best exercise experiences to young adults living in all areas of the city.
