A few years ago, Shenzhen was perhaps best known for its affordable tailors and massage parlors, not as a city of art and design. Now, though, Shenzhen is home to a number of design events, from the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (also held in Hong Kong) to Shenzhen Design Week, and is positioning itself as China’s “design city.”

This month saw the opening of the Design Society, China’s first dedicated cultural center. Housed within the sleek, modern Sea World Culture and Arts Center (SWCAC) designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, the center is already home to a number of intriguing, state-of-the-art installations. There will also be a V&A Gallery — the first branch of the renowned Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) to open outside of the United Kingdom. Not bad at all for our sister city!
