It’s the latest health craze in Hong Kong so chances are good that you’ve heard of the Keto Diet. This unique – and dare we say it, indulgent – diet focuses on high (unsaturated) fat content and modest amounts of protein but drastically restricts the amount of carbohydrates you can eat. Fans of the diet swear by it because of it’s rather dramatic benefits which include weight loss, improved health markers, better mental focus, and more. The only catch is that Hong Kong is a carb-loving city, which can make it hard to eat out and stay keto at the same time. Luckily, we’ve found a few keto-friendly restaurants in Hong Kong.

Yes, it is possible to visit an Italian restaurant while on keto, as long as you’re able to stay away from the pizza and pasta. This neighboorhood Italian in Sheung Wan has a great appetizer bar for lunch which is extremely Keto-friendly. You’ll be able to feast on as much cured meats, cheese, burrata and salad as your carb-hating heart could want – and you’ll feel entirely satisfied and full, afterwards.

BÊP Vietnamese Kitchen

This Vietnamese chain has a couple of restaurants around Hong Kong, and they all offer a menu with plenty of keto-friendly options. Start things off with the Bo Tai Chanh (a delicious beef carpaccio – just avoid the crispy baguette chips) or the satay skewers. If you’re hungry for more, go ahead and order a big bowl of pho – BÊP has heeded the demand for low-carb options and now allows you to replace noodles with zoodles (zucchini noodles) in most of their pho dishes.

The owner of this mini-golf club at Causeway Bay’s Fashion Walk was one of The Loop HK’s 30 Under 30 2019 winners, and clearly, one of his keys to success is giving the people what they want because Stokes is one of the only places in Hong Kong to really make an effort with low-carb options. There’s a section dedicated to cauliflower-base pizzas; simple but delicious kale tuna salads; and even mains like Spanish octopus and USDA prime ribeye.

Mana! Fast Slow Food

This “faster slow food” eatery is a go-to for healthy eating in Hong Kong, so it should come as no surprise that they’re pretty solid for keto dieters, too. Their signature burgers are all available with a “naked” option – read: they come without buns for a low-carb choice – and their daily salads can be customized with toppings like roasted cauliflower, grilled tofu, avocado, and halloumi for that fatty protein hit without the diet-killing carbs.

Another favorite of Hong Kong’s healthy eating community, Locofama offers a great build-your-own Buddha Bowl for lunch. You can match proteins like shredded chicken breast or sesame seared tuna with a baby spinach and Portobello mushroom salad then top with extras like avocado and feta. If you’re dining in, you can treat yourself to heavier mains like pan-fried wild-caught salmon fillet and the signature 48-hour slow-cooked natural beef short-rib.

Maison Libanaise

Yeah, we know hummus and pita bread aren’t keto, but hear us out. There are a host of keto-friendly options available on the menu of this Black Sheep Restaurants eatery – you just have to know how to order. Go for things pan-fried halloumi, sawda djej (pan-fried chicken liver with pomegranate molasses), and then order something from the grill (you’re spoilt for choice with lamb, chicken and beef).

The Cakery

For those with a big sweet tooth, one of the hardest things about the keto diet is having to say no to your favorite treats. Luckily The Cakery has a dedicated keto menu so you can indulge your cravings without any guilt. There’s the kickin’ keto cupcake, the chocolate cheescake, and chocolate indulgence cake, so just pick your poison and go to town.
