The Loop HK 30 Under 30 2017

Air race pilot

Kenny Chiang isn’t your everyday pilot — he was the first in Hong Kong to win the Red Bull World Championship air race series this year, which took place in Kazan, Russia.

He won in the Challenger Class tier, in a race that tests for pilots’ ability to fly lightweight planes as well as their speed in demanding conditions. He clocked at one minute, 07.264 seconds.

“Aviation in Hong Kong is quite limited.”

The Hongkonger was educated in the UK, and has been back home for a decade. After making his start working as a pilot for Cathay Pacific, he also worked as a manager director for aerospace manufacturing company CADT.

Today, Chiang travels around the world to compete — something he says he loves. On the side, he was responsible for bringing BodyExpress, a gym that specializes in electro muscle stimulation workouts, to the city.

Looking ahead, Chiang wants Hong Kong to learn more about the other side of aviation. “Aviation in Hong Kong is quite limited. One of my goals is to bring the Red Bull Air Race to Hong Kong, so the local public can have the opportunity to experience something close and full of adrenaline.”

His first job? “Flying a Boeing 747 with Cathay Pacific.”

His role model? “Elon Musk.”
