Dear Lulu: About a month ago, my company welcomed a new member of staff, who’s my supervisor. She is very competent and passionate about her work, and slowly I found myself becoming attracted to her. It doesn’t hurt that she is also sweet and good-looking. I would like to pursue it, but I’m pretty sure this kind of thing is frowned upon at work — especially as she’s essentially my boss. What should I do?! — Competent Professional
Dear CP: You should always be super careful about workplace romances, especially when this person is your direct supervisor.
Think about it. It’s all well and good if everything works out. Until word gets out, and one day you happen to get a promotion. People won’t appreciate that you got that through your own hard work — they will all assume that it has something to do with your relationship.
And let’s say it doesn’t work out — or maybe even ends badly. This mean you would need to work with an ex as your boss. Worse case scenario: This may jeopardize your chances of progressing in the company.
You know what they say: Don’t shit where you eat!
