Hong Kong has won over other cities like Guadalajara and Washington D.C. as the next host city for the Gay Games XI in 2022. The Gay Games originated in San Francisco in 1982 and consists of over a week of sporting and cultural festivities for people of all orientations. Dragon boating, trail running and tower running will be some of the medal sports featured, and the Games are expected to attract up to 15,000 participants from around the world.

Hong Kong will be the first Asian city to host the Gay Games, thanks to a winning bid submitted by LGBT group Out in HK. The Hong Kong bid is supported by government organizations like the Hong Kong Tourism Board and the Equal Opportunities Commission, and is seen as a big step up for gay rights in a traditionally conservative city.
