Healthy-ish Boozing: Topiary specializes in “shim cocktails” — drinks with low alcohol content. Before you scoff at the idea, just imagine a night on the tiles without a raging hangover the next day. Sounds kinda nice, eh?

Look & Feel: Designed by Hong Kong firm Lala Curio, the interiors at Topiary are an eclectic, quirky mix of bright colors, red sofas, chandeliers and kitsch decorations all around. Outside, clipped trees line the terrace (ahem, Topiary means refers to the art of clipping shrubs into ornamental shapes). It’s a great people watching spot — look down and you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the bustling intersection between Hollywood Road, Graham Street and Lyndhurst Terrace.

Topiary Vegetarian Canapés

On the Menu: The signature cocktails all have cheeky names as a nod to the three founders’ background as financiers. Since our last visit there have been some new additions on the cocktail menu. We have our eye on the Hunting Elephants ($128), consisting of Tanqueray No. Ten, Bianco Vermouth, herbal liqueur Benedictine D.O.M and grapefruit bitters. Pair your healthy cocktails with the vegetarian bar bites.

Service: There’s a good staff-to-guest ratio here, meaning you never have to wait long for drink orders. Don’t like those shim cocktails? The mixologists here can whip up stronger tipples without hesitation.

Jeng: Nothing here is done half-heartedly: a lot of effort has obviously gone into creating the drinks and veggie bar bites, while the atmosphere is decidedly laid-back. We adore the champagne-based Bulge Bracket ($138), made with St. Germain elderflower liqueur, fresh raspberries, lime juice and of course, bubbles. The Tonkatsu Sandwich Surprise ($78) is our all-time favorite bar snack: it’s a deep-fried veggie patty with wasabi coleslaw and teriyaki sauce between crispy French toasts.

Not So Jeng: Topiary’s proximity to residential buildings means that noise complaints from its neighbors are basically inevitable. If you’re drinking on the terrace, you’ll probably be asked to keep your voices down/move inside at some point in the evening, which can be a bit of a fun killer.

Great For: After-work boozing, parties in the VIP room, date nights.

FYI: If you’re throwing a party, be sure to book the VIP room, which comes complete with its very own private terrace.
