Going Underground: Hollywood Road has a new watering hole, Iron Fairies — a fantasy world centered on ore miners and fairies made from metal, because why not? With branches in Bangkok and Tokyo, the bar’s Hong Kong outpost comes hot on the heels of sister bars Ophelia on Lee Tung Avenue and J.Boroski, which is a few steps down the street.

Look & Feel: A raw and rusty look that makes you feel you’re on the set of “Lord of the Rings.” Everywhere you turn, there’s something to marvel at — from the thousands of butterflies that hang off the ceiling to iron, brick and timber details. Our favorite part of the bar are the “furnaces” and “casting rooms” — three individual low-ceilinged spaces with a super-intimate vibe that accommodate small parties of five to six. Why all of this, you ask? The place takes inspiration from Iron Fairies co-founder Ashley Sutton’s previous profession as an iron miner in Australia.

On the Menu: Find cocktails, craft beers and wines aplenty. One of the most unusual concoctions is the Pink Tako, a mix of house-infused cranberry gin with homemade cranberry cordial, egg, and yuzu, garnished with a piece of — wait for it — dried octopus.

This is no place for small plates or nibbles — hearty dishes like burgers and pork knuckles make up the food menu.

Service: Nothing short of amazing. The servers are never too busy to take good care of you, no matter which nook or cranny you’ve been seated at.

Jeng: Iron Fairies is a real destination kind of bar. You’ll want to spend some time marvelling its incredible décor, great for racking up likes on Instagram and impressing friends/dates/out-of-towners.

Not So Jeng: We’re not particularly blown away by the watermelon daiquiri cocktail — it’s a watered-down drink that tastes not unlike something you might find in a karaoke bar.

Great For: All-nighters — the bar is open until 3am every day!
