Asia’s coming in hot. For the eighth year running, Hong Kong was named the most visited city in the world, beating top contenders like London, New York, Singapore and Beijing for the honor. The title was bestowed through the recently released “Top 100 City Destinations of 2018”, an aggregated report published by global market research company Euromonitor International.
The Thai capital of Bangkok took the second spot for the second year in a row. Asian cities continue to grow as travel destinations with 41 cities named to the top 100 list, compared to 37 in 2012. In particular, Japan and India are seeing increasing popularity, with incoming arrivals continuing to grow at big cities in the two countries. Delhi, Mumbai and Tokyo all landed in top 20 slots.
Hong Kong’s lure as a travel destination will no doubt continue to grow with the implementation of new infrastructure. The Zhuhai-Macau-Hong Kong bridge, which opened in October, and the West Kowloon high-speed rail link that connects to Guangzhou and Shenzhen (and from there, to the rest of China) are cutting travel time and encouraging visitors to get to Hong Kong.
The top 20 city destinations, according to the Euromonitor International report, are:
- Hong Kong
- Bangkok, Thailand
- London, England
- Singapore
- Macau
- Paris, France
- Dubai, United Arab Emirates
- New York City, USA
