One of Hong Kong’s most esteemed photographers, Leong Ka Tai, is putting on a lifestyle exhibition at the Hong Kong Design Institute Gallery this spring. Running from March 18 to May 30, Leong’s ‘Over the Ocean, On the Road’ multimedia exhibition will chronicle the journey of Leong and his wife Rebecca Ng, who traveled from Hong Kong to South America in an unusual way.
The couple started with a three-month voyage on a container ship across the Pacific Ocean, and then worked their way from Colombia to Cuba over land. The visual imagery collected from the trip is stunning and captivating, featuring a mix of videos, time lapses, photographs, installations and even some thought-provoking performances thrown in to mix things up.
One of the video installations, dubbed “Message in a Bottle”, captures the trip across 32 TV monitors. Leong gathered messages, calligraphy and drawings from 32 artists and bottled them up, tossing them into the Pacific Ocean during the trip. A biologist in Canada found one eight months later, and got in touch with Leong, becoming part of the experiment.
As a collective whole, the exhibition aims to reflect on how travel enriches life, and how unplugging from your phone, Wi-Fi and all things digital helps you reconnect with the world.
