Reinventing Traditions: Tang Ying Chi is a renowned Hong Kong artist, educator, curator and writer. The exhibition “The Place: Fantasia of Scenery by Tang Ying Chi” showcases 30 pieces of Tang’s recent paintings, including her latest series “The Place”, created in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. Inspired by traditional Chinese landscape paintings, the new series explores the pursuit of an ideal world — a prominent theme in ancient Chinese landscape paintings — and uses a mix of Chinese and Western painting techniques such as ink painting and bright colored blocks.
The colour scheme is comprised primarily of red, yellow, blue, white and black, which represents the Five Elements: fire, earth, wood, metal and water. Having been educated in the West, Tang reinterprets the East through a mixed cultural lens, and invites viewers to immerse in her imaginary landscapes and to envision their ideal world.
