Outside of the Mainstream: The Hong Kong Independent Film Festival was created to screen movies that are not available in commercial cinemas. This year, with the city-wide closures of all cinemas, it is even more important to support the industry. Due to the pandemic, the 13th Hong Kong Independent Film Festival will be screened online. Among the program is Me and My Condemned Son, the Golden Horse nominated Taiwan documentary on the families of convicted murderers about to receive the death sentence. Ode to Book People is a critically-acclaimed documentary about booksellers in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia, while March on, In Defiance of Tyranny is about Community March’s journey from the Umbrella Movement to the anti-extradition protests.
