Hong Kong 30 Under 30 2015

Founder and designer, Melissa Bui Atelier

When Melissa Bui launched her first fashion collection in 2013, which consisted of 18 hand-embroidered pieces, she instantly became a name to watch. Two years on, her eponymous label is growing from strength to strength.

Prior to launching her brand, Bui worked with renowned names in the fashion world like Matthew Williamson as well as Hong Kong designer Barney Cheng. Bui draws inspiration from 1950s fashion, evident in her signature evening gowns as well as lightweight day dresses.

The designer gets down to business

“I always find inspiration in experiences that I’ve had, whether it is being mesmerized by our beautiful city’s lights or swimming above brightly colored corals in the Maldives.”

What can we expect from her next year? Bui’s current Fall/Winter 2015 and Spring/Summer 2016 lines will capture her inspirations and translate them to fashion.

“It never gets easier, but don’t give up. Just remember that in one special moment for me it is when I see my designs come to life it will be all worth it.”

Her very first job? Working over the summer at a fast food restaurant handling all beverages.
