Hong Kong 30 Under 30 2015

Golden Scene film acquisitions manager

Felix Tsang is responsible for bringing some of the best international films to Hong Kong. Working as an acquisitions manager at local independent film company Golden Scene, Tsang sources movies from all around the world to distribute within the Hong Kong market.

To work out which films should be acquired for the upcoming year, Tsang travels to international film festivals, meeting producers and sales agents as well as attending screenings and presentations.

Tsang had a hand in bringing upcoming film Spotlight, starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Stanley Tucci, to Hong Kong — something that he considers one of his biggest achievements.

“When I picked up this project, it was still shooting in Boston, and I had no idea how the film was going to turn out. But I saw the awards potential behind this captivating subject matter and stellar cast, and thought, let’s go for it,” he explains.

The film is now generating awards buzz. “The sense of accomplishment comes from knowing that something you believed in a year ago somehow found its way to become a great contender in the upcoming awards season.”

But for film-lover Tsang, it’s not about the glitz and glamor. “The feeling that I enjoy the most is when the audience in Hong Kong appreciates a film that I’ve personally had a hand in acquiring,” he says.

His very first job? Tsang was a team leader at SuperCamp Hong Kong for a summer during high school.
