Owner and general manager, Popway Hotel
As a child, David Lau told his parents that he wanted to run his own hotel, and true to his word, he established two hostels in Mong Kok when he was still an undergraduate business student at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Lau worked in finance after graduation, but pursued his passion through a master’s degree in international hospitality management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
This year, he opened Popway Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui — a boutique property with 63 rooms that only employs Hong Kong locals and houses Uptop Bistro and Bar, home to a gorgeous sky deck.
Lau calls his team “poppets,” and Popway stands for Passion Of Poppets Will Amaze You. “To me, a hotel is not only a place of accommodation. It’s a social spot in which sharing, communications, excitement and surprises take place.”
His very first job? Lau started off in the banking industry.
