Need some privacy? Only 15 minutes away from Sai Kung by boat is Yim Tin Tsai. The tiny island was originally inhabited by hundreds of Hakka villagers in the 19th century who farmed, fished, and made salt. As these industries declined, however, the island’s population dwindled, until it was completely abandoned by the 1990s. Now, the island is a great spot for taking spooky snaps because of the village houses that are still standing — many of which are still filled with a mishmash of personal belongings. St Joseph’s Chapel, a Grade III historical building, and Ching Po School, now converted into a heritage center, are also important relics of the island’s history.
