Sam Tung Uk (“three rows of dwellings” in Chinese) harks back to when Tsuen Wan was simply a collection of villages. The 200-year-old walled village was preserved and restored by the Hong Kong government when its Hakka inhabitants were displaced as a result of the construction of the Tsuen Wan MTR terminal in the 1970s, and has since been turned into a museum showcasing Hakka village life of the past through objects such as furniture and farming equipment. One gallery is dedicated to Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage; look out for demonstrations and performances of Hakka mountain songs, Hong Kong style milk tea, and more.
