The Loop HK 30 Under 30 2017

Co-founder and managing director, Cafuné

In 2015, Hongkonger Day Lau co-founded fashion label Cafuné with childhood friend Queenie Fan. The label’s signature minimalistic designs have taken the local fashion scene by storm, and is also gaining major traction on social media.

After spending six years studying in the UK, Lau moved back to Hong Kong and initially took up a role with a boutique communications agency that specializes in property and architecture. She worked with big-name real estate clients like SOM, Swire Properties and Heatherwick Studios.

“I also hope that Cafuné can be part of the driving force in changing up the retail scene here, by giving consumers more independent choices.”

Today at Cafuné, Lau works on operations, finance, sales and marketing, with Fan as creative director. “Part of the reason Queenie and I founded Cafuné was because there weren’t many good-quality contemporary accessories labels from Hong Kong,” she explains. “That is what we want to bring to the market: well-crafted products that do not break the bank.”

“I also hope that Cafuné can be part of the driving force in changing up the retail scene here, by giving consumers more independent choices.”

Her first job? “A summer internship at the Savantas Policy Institute, a think tank led by [Legco member and founder of political party New People’s Party] Regina Ip, back in 2009.”

Her role model? “[Co-founder] Queenie, because she is extremely driven and always full of ideas. My former boss Cassius Taylor-Smith [now executive director and head of marketing and communications for Asia at Colliers International) is also a superb influence on me.”
