Dear Lulu Jeh: I’m from Canada, my divorce just got finalized last month and I decided to take up an offer from my company and relocate to Hong Kong to be closer to my family. I’m in my mid-30s and have not been on the scene for over a decade. Any advice much appreciated! — Mr. Clueless
Hi MC: It’s a crazy different singles’ world today no matter where you are, and there are now an infinite number ways to mingle. Start by familiarizing yourself with the HK dating scene, and check out a few apps that are making the rounds: like Grouvly, Coffee Meets Bagel and Paktor, to name a few.
And never underestimate the power of referrals. Go out and socialize with your co-workers after office hours, and get them to bring along a few of their buddies. When all else fails, grab a few wingmen and party it up in Lan Kwai Fong: as cheesy as it sounds, you wouldn’t believe how many successful unions have been born out of one messy, alcohol-fueled evening.
The point is, it’s actually incredibly easy to meet people in Hong Kong, and as long as you get your ass out of the house, you’ll be just fine. — Lulu
