After being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, Art Basel Hong Kong announced that the annual art fair will return in 2021 to Hong Kong in a hybrid format combining in-person shows and digital platforms. Bringing together 104 galleries from 23 countries and territories, Art Basel will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 19 to May 23, 2021.
Other than leading galleries such as Hauser & Wirth, David Zwirner, Gagosian, and Pace, there will also be galleries based in Asia like Beijing Commune, PKM Gallery, Pearl Lam Galleries, Ota Fine Arts and more. 2021 will also see first-time participants including Karma from New York and Proyectors Monclova from Mexico City.
The “Insights” section will focus on presenting modern art from Asia and Asia-Pacific. Among the most anticipated are new works by Korean photographer Heeseung Chung at Gallery Baton, and Axel Vervoordt Gallery’s presentation of “Encounter – A Mirror Woman” by Korean artist Kimsooja.
Considering the current international travel restrictions, Art Basel will introduce a big online element with new digital initiative “Art Basel Live: Hong Kong” to connect the galleries with a global audience. It will include an Online Viewing Room, special online events, live broadcasts and virtual walkthroughs.
Art Basel will also set up satellite booths for exhibitions who cannot be at the show physically. 56 of the booths will be staffed by a representative appointed by Art Basel.
