Founder, Marco M Chan Atelier and Styling
Marco Chan’s whimsical evening and wedding gown designs have won him legions of Hong Kong celebrity fans.
The Hong Kong-born designer, stylist and art director cut his teeth in the fashion industry at a local brand, which tracked him down before he had graduated from a fashion designer diploma degree at the Caritas Bianchi College of Careers.
He ended up quitting after a month, though went on to work as a visual merchandiser at Lane Crawford, and as an assistant stylist.
While working with Cantopop singer Kay Tse as a stylist on an upcoming concert in 2013, Chan says they struggled to find the “perfect look” for her. He decided to step it, and create her outfit himself. “That’s how my brand got started.”
As founder of his namesake label, Chan specializes in creating show-stopping tailor-made pieces fit for red carpets yet wouldn’t look out of place at wedding banquets. He has worked with an illustrious list of clients that include Paris Hilton, as well as Hong Kong actress Candice Yu and model Kathy Chow.
When it comes to challenges he faces in the fashion industry, Chan says he finds that people are more into fast fashion than tailor-made pieces. “I think we don’t have many haute couture [designers] left in Hong Kong as this city is changing too fast,” he says. Ultimately, the goal is to keep the craft alive and showcase the creativity behind it — and to share them with the masses.
What is he most proud of? Running his brand for five years, only doing tailor-made pieces.
His role model? Fashion designer Zac Posen.
