Walk leader, ImpactHK

Cosmo Lo is a walk leader at ImpactHK, an NGO that organizes daily food drives for the homeless in Hong Kong and works to get them off the streets and into employment.

ImpactHK also puts on regular “Kindness Walks,” which volunteer visits to the community.

Lo usually leads the walks in Sham Shui Po once a week. “The area has one of the biggest homeless populations [in Hong Kong],” he explains. “With the help of volunteers, we give out daily necessities and also chat with different people on the way. I try to understand their story and needs, as well as catch up with their latest situation.”

On a case-by-case basis, Lo invites them to visit ImpactHK’s day center, The Guestroom, for further assistance.

Lo previously worked as a communications officer at the Civic Exchange, and participated in his first walk with ImpactHK two years ago. ImpactHK’s founder of CEO Jeff Rotmeyer invited him to become a walk leader.

Alongside his role, he also holds a full-time job and is about to start working with Drink Without Waste, an initiative that aims to reduce waste from beverage consumption.

“The main motivation [behind working at ImpactHK] is the friendships that we build with the underprivileged ones on the streets and I see this is a very simple, but effective way to support people during their toughest time of their life,” he explains.

“The most important part is to spread kindness, also try to build up trust and friendships with the people that we meet on the streets.”

What inspires him? “The bond among our volunteers and the people that we help.”
